Outdoor activities with masks are considered low risk!
Participants will receive an #OaklandWalks mask to support safe outdoor activity (while supplies last).
Now more than ever, Oakland students need safe and healthy ways to get exercise, and schools serving low-income families need financial support. Oakland Walks will provide thousands of students, family members, educators, and community members with an opportunity to raise money for public schools by tracking as many steps as possible – at safe times and places – throughout October 2020.
This is a free initiative for all schools and participants. Schools that will receive the proceeds from #OaklandWalks do not have to fundraise to participate! They do the walking, and we’ll raise the money for them.
- Engage 3,000+ students, parents, and community members in safe and healthy outdoor activity.
- Collectively take 30 million steps during the month of October.
- Raise money for K-8 schools in that Oakland Unified School district that serve a majority of students from low-income families.
Register Your School
All Oakland public schools can participate. All participating schools will receive masks, pedometers to track your steps, and medals for participants.
Volunteer Walkers Needed
Help us reach 30 million steps! Students, adults, community members, and friends of Oakland public schools from across the country can participate too! If you’re interested in walking and collecting pledges, sign up below.
Participants can walk anywhere, at any time, and should only walk when and where they feel it is safe to do so. Everyone is expected to wear face masks when outside of their home.
Participants can walk anywhere at any time. This includes: around the neighborhood, at local parks, in the Oakland/Berkeley hills, along the Oakland Safe Streets routes, and even inside of their homes/backyards. We will provide a comprehensive list of ideas for safe places to walk.
Schools that will be receiving money from #OaklandWalks are NOT REQUIRED to fundraise. The Oakland Public Education Fund will lead fundraising efforts and distribute proceeds to the recipient schools. If other community members (i.e. students and parents from other schools, volunteers, neighbors) would like to help fundraise, individual fundraising pages can be set up here.
All schools that are in the Oakland Unified School District that serve more than 50% of students from low-income families can receive proceeds from #OaklandWalks IF they commit to helping track the number of steps taken by their students, staff, and community members. Schools can use their donated funds for any purposes they deem beneficial for students.
The Alameda County Health Department permits “Outdoor Fitness” activity, and requires people to wear face coverings when in public places. If the County guidelines change, we will cancel or postpone #OaklandWalks until it is safe to do so. Learn more at the Alameda County Health Department website.
