Imagine a World in Which Teachers are Respected, Valued, and Supported
At Teachers of Oakland, we believe that the narrative around teachers must shift. The culture around public education must evolve to one based in empathy and gratitude. We imagine a world in which teachers are respected, valued, and supported in ways that help them sustainably teach students and grow in their own careers. We imagine a community in which we operate from a baseline of compassion – toward teachers and toward each other. Teachers of Oakland is on a mission toward this societal shift, and the first step is getting proximate. You may not all be able to come to the teacher, but we can bring the teacher to you.
How We Do It
How do we do it? We amplify teachers by interviewing them about their lives, their motivations, and their challenges – and then using social media to spread their story. We unearth empathy through the stories we share. And we inspire action from community members, businesses, and the community.
So far, we’ve amplified the stories of over 160 Oakland teachers. Our community is 9,000 strong through social media, and hundreds have attended our local community events. We have a mighty team of volunteer storytellers, and we are always looking for more volunteers to help us do this work.
