ADOPT AN OAKLAND
Make a lasting and meaningful impact at one Oakland school by volunteering with your team throughout the school year. When you Adopt an Oakland School, your team plays a big role in supporting positive school culture and student achievement as you take part in important volunteer projects that fit the talents of your group.
To hear about the experience through the eyes of groups that have already adopted a school, read these first-person stories from KTGY and 1st United Credit Union. Please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org to get started or ask questions!
A big thanks to these businesses that have adopted Oakland schools this year!
“[Adopting an Oakland school] has provided opportunities to strengthen the team building within our company, reinforce our connection to Oakland’s community, share our profession with potential future architects and planners, work with an invested school and their staff, and gain new knowledge from an exciting and energetic bunch of 6th-graders.” – Senior Planner Cindy Ma, whose company, KTGY, has adopted Madison Park Business & Art Academy
THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
Back to School Clean-Up Days
Teachers have precious little time to prepare their classrooms before the first day of school in August. Lighten their lift by pitching in to prep rooms and hallways so students come back to a clean and orderly space for learning! This opportunity takes place in the three days before the first day of school every year.
To celebrate diversity in literature and encourage a love of books, we host three Read-Ins every year, with hundreds of volunteers visiting schools across Oakland schools to read aloud with kids. Visit www.oaklandedfund.org/read to sign up for our next Read-In.
• Latinx Literature Read-In, October 2-6, 2017
• African American Literature Read-In, February 5-9, 2018
• Asian Pacific American Literature Read-In, May 7-11, 2018
Computer Science Education Week, December 4-8, 2017
Along with OUSD and other partners, we help Oakland kids explore new opportunities in tech during Computer Science Education Week. We invite you to share your experience in the tech industry with students by visiting a school as a guest speaker, presenting a case study, or giving a demonstration. Check out our recap of last year’s events to get a better idea for the options.
Is your team ready? To learn more about taking part in any of these opportunities, please reach out to Program Coordinator, Lilly Smith email@example.com.
